The Spirit of the rule

There is the rule and the spirit of the rule.

The rule is what’s put into words, so that rules can be easily communicated.

The spirit of the rule is what the rule aims to achieve. That is the intent behind creating this rule in the first place.

To make it practical, understood and remembered, a rule has to be short.

But the rule can’t possibly fully cover what it aims to achieve. This is why rules are often broken or abused.

In any organization, having rules is necessary to manage complexity and guide behaviors. However, the most important rule of all is that one should obey the spirit of the rule, not the rule itself.

I will follow the rules
